Mortarboards with tassels date back to the 1700’s and are an Oxford tradition. Amazingly, they were worn even by some schoolteachers up until the 1950’s, but today they are mostly only worn at graduation ceremonies like this one, where the tradition of throwing them in the air after the ceremony is one of the most well known graduation traditions. They are quite heavy though, and smiles quickly disappear when gravity takes over, and the scholarly shuriken shower the new grads with painful irony.
