The Eastern Water Dragon, one of two subspecies of the Australian Water Dragon, is identified by the dark band behind it’s eye. A large reptile that grows up to 60cm long, they are excellent swimmers and when chased or threatened can sit underwater for up to 90 minutes to avoid detection. This one was photographed near the north beach, Byron Bay.
