Australia is by geography, a drought prone country. The 7 years from 1895 – 1902 were known as the ”Federation Drought” followed by a shorter dry period in 1914-1915. Another longer spell during world war two lasted 8 years, then a 3 year drought from 1965. In 1982-3 there was another shorter drought before the longer “El nino” extreme weather from 1995. Now, in 2005 3 years have passed since the drought officially started again, without much reprieve. Because of this, even heavy rainfalls barely seem to make a difference to the low damn levels and it may be years before true recovery.
