Australian Common Wombat - Vombatus ursinus

Several hundred kilometers from home on the snowy mountains highway crossing the great divide in the high country, a wombat shuffles across the roadside and a car flashes its headlights to me as they drive past. Pulling over, I grabbed my camera and cheap video camera and followed it into the ditch. As I sat there taking photos and footage of the beautiful eldery wombat, a red ute pulls over to my 4wd on the embankment. A friend steps out and tells me he saw me passing 50 kms back and stopped to have a chinwag. As I stood there knee deep in grass, the smell of wombat urine all around, my mate exchanging news from his new east coast home, the two of us in the middle of nowhere a vast sweeping landscape as a wombat chewed grass at my feet, I marvelled at the country I truly call home.
