As the waters receed, the earth cracks, lightning ignites the natural tinder and scorches the landscape during the harshest drought and the biggest fires Australian’s have even known and environmental historians suggest could be the most severe in centuries. Pictured here, Albury’s flood mitigation lagoon was only recently a small local breeding colony for swamphens, ibis and ducks. Despite the parched appearance, even a slight rain yeilds signs of life, and inconspicuous seeds blanket the ground with grasses and aquatic plants that lie in waiting for the change of the seasons.
