Went out walking with a cheap Opteka 500mm lens today, and became frustrated with its quality and changed it for the trusty 300mm, not great either but far easier to use. Also the 500mm was useless when a small bird flies in close and stops, there is no way to get focus at that distance. Even with a tripod and mirror lockup the distance shots didn’t have the clarity the Canon EF 300mm does.
