Horse flies lead a relatively short life of only 3 to 4 weeks and pack a fairly annoying sting (out of focus in this photo). In actual fact it is the female Horse fly that seeks “blood meals” by biting an animal (such as a cow) and letting the blood weep from the wound which they gather around. According to The Department of Medical Entomology cows can lose up to 300ml of blood per day from biting fly attacks.
