There are 300 species of ladybird in Australia, of which four are common and widespread. I’m not sure whether this is one of them, but this one occurs on the northern NSW coast. Laybirds have small fat larvae that look like black slugs with legs, but become the beatles which hibernate in the winter and come out in spring to feed and mate.
