A large honeyeater, the Noisy Friarbird is relatively common in urban areas from north east Victoria to Queensland, although is also found in southern New Guinea. The distinctive “bump” on their bill and scaly appearance has always reminded me of Jim Henson’s Skeksis from the Dark Crystal. Despite their title and appearance, their song is actually quite pleasant to wake up to!
