A quick stop on the side of the Hume Highway, across the road and into someone’s paddock, I saw the most amazing light being cast across the paddock in the dusty air. A dead tree, or stag, will often become a refuge for nesting birds, reptiles or even mammals and are a vitally important port of Australia’s ecology. Unfortunately, most dead trees are cleared almost immediately.
