According to wikipedia there are conflicting accounts of why the ”The Remarkables” are so named. It’s either because they are one of two mountain ranges in the world that run perfectly North-South, or because early settlers thought they was so beautiful. I was secretly hoping it was discovered by someone called Mr (or Mrs) Remarkable. Other things I learned today is that Lake Wakatipu is 300m deep and The Remarkables are almost 2400m high.
