Moths are often extremely phototropic inverterbrates and can easily be found hovering around lights. You would have noticed the behaviour with your home’s outdoor lights during the summer months.
I found several of this apparently locally common species attracted to the camp light along with many other smaller moths and insects. Eventually a moth flew in that was as big as a small sparrow.
For this photo I used a 300mm telephoto lens and a 50mm prime lens reversed. A flourescent light was used below which had attracted the moth while a friend held a torch. Handheld, I rested the edge of the lens against the tree and angled in until that extreme short depth of field in focus swept from the eye and across the wing.
