These girls approached me to have their photo’s taken. Obviously friends or sisters, the older girl has already had a child in homeless circumstances. For many poor communities, having a baby can improve the ”return” on begging generally, and at a young age the child can then take over the begging duties primarily or even be ”hired” to others for the same purpose.

Immediately after having their photo taken, they asked for money. Surrounded by literally hundreds of beggars all eyeing me suspiciously, I could only motion for their forgiveness, and know that ultimately our work there will benefit their whole community more than token donations ever will.
