Behind the pond in this photo, a grand palace stands over the neighboring buildings filling the air with lilting melodies. It was donated to the Sikhs hundreds of years ago and now worshippers offer money, leaves, nuts and spices to the altars, bowing reverently and praying. The building is filled with people, some kneeling, others lying in the corners most praying and then moving outside to lap the giant pond, filled with catfish that gulp at the oily surface. Mosquitos buzz around the stagnant brown water yet the faithful dunk their heads, drink and when the security Sikh is not looking, take a quick bath.
