During the goldrush era, Reidy Creek attracted more than 6000 people who worked up and down the water, digging and dredging for gold, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and more. Beechworth sustained the transient population of Australians, Irishmen, and a large contingent of Chinese. Their bodies were buried here and the Burning Towers were erected as their memorial.
