The moon is 3476 kilometers in diameter, about quarter the size of the earth, but looking at it from here I could cover it with my thumb, or these two lovers can be seen kissing beside it. In another sense, when the moon passes in front of the sun which is 109 times the earths diameter it appears roughly the same size. Australian’s should be able to watch a Lunar eclipse on Tuesday 9th Feb. For more details see http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2009Feb09N.GIF
