Number one on my “things to do with my first DSLR camera” list was astrophotography and other long exposure experiments. Whilst camping at a travelling stock route I decided to try, making many mistakes and lacking basic equipment such as a tripod much improvisation was required. A lot of patience is required although at least there is instant gratification when it does go right when shooting with digital equipment.
This was my first, and thankfully not last successful attempt at astrophotography. As you can see by the heat noise on the image, the digital CCD suffers from distortion of this kind after long exposures. This can be offset to some degree by shooting on a cold night, but then you may have to contend with frost haze on the lens also.
Websites such as Space Weather can guide you to astronomical events, websites and references and is a good source to check regularly.
