It’s hard to see the milky way in an urban area flooded with streetlights. Some urban areas are illuminated with sodium-vapor streetlights, which colour the area with that familiar orange glow. These lights are slightly more forgiving for astronomers, as you can see here compared to the towns white streetlight glow on the left, virtually erasing the stars from view.
