When the forecast says rain later, I can’t risk setting up the telescope. So last night I took some photos with my DSLR and a regular 50mm prime lens. As I was focussing on Jupiter, rising up in the east I was surprised to learn that it’s moons are clearly visible through a regular camera! You can see two of them on each side. Europa and Io are together as one on the left, and Ganymede on the right.
I double checked with various apps to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. It almost made the 50 mosquito bites I copped while outside near a dark wetland for 10 minutes worthwhile.
8 x 4s exposures @ 6400 ISO, f1.8, Stacked in Nebulosity.
